Memorial to save the tree

Police making an arrest

The City of Portland is cutting down a century-old Sequoia tree in Pier Park to make way for a bike path and pedestrian bridge.

Neighbors say they weren't given enough notice to attend public meetings and accuse the city of moving too fast.  They say they were duped as the city changed course from a mediation session yesterday, moving crews in today to begin cutting down the tree.

So, they stood in the way.  At least one woman was arrested.  It took four officers to get Chris Fountain in handcuffs.

The North Portland Greenway is a planned 10-plus mile trail extending to downtown.
