Follow The Law? Dr. Death Doesn't Feel Like It

To a lot of Oregonians, he’s Governor John Kitzhaber.  He signs himself MD although I understand his medical license is not current.  But I always think of him as Dr. Death, since he keeps coming up with killer ideas for his state. Like Doctor Assisted Suicide.  Now he has another one that’s guaranteed to end in the murderous, painful death of innocent citizens.  Strangely enough Kitzhaber doesn't believe in the Death Penalty.  So he has refused to enforce the laws on the books that require the execution of convicted killers.  The doc apparently thinks his personal feelings trump state laws passed not once, but twice by Oregon voters.  And Now Kitzhaber wants the legislature to get rid of the death penalty altogether.  My friend, district attorney Josh Marquis, one of this country’s acknowledged experts on the death penalty points out that the best criminal research on hand, says every time you execute a killer, you save the lives of at least people who would have been murdered.  The death penalty deters.   The studies also say each dead bad guy could save as many as 20 murders.  But when it comes to a choice of saving lives…or saving the lives of killers and the governor’s feelings…we know which one is more important…don’t we?
