A section of Old Town is now car-free on weekends, part of a pilot program to make the area safer.

Police said people crowd the district during the summer, where over 4,000 to 5,000 overcrowd sidewalks and block cars. Officers often have to break up drunken fights.  City officials saw for themselves in October at some of the problems.

Beginning December 28th, the car-free zones are in effect from 10pm until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays and all major holidays.  The zone will include West Burnside to Northwest Everett and 2nd to 4th Avenues.

Closures continue through April 1, 2013. The pilot program will then be reviewed to see how it has had an impact on local residents and businesses.
