Same-sex couples began lining up last night in Washington to get a marriage license. They waited for the doors to open this morning when the state's new law took effect. Washington is the 7th state to legalize gay marriage.
Jessica Lee and Ashley Cavner were the first couple to get a license in Clark County. They waited outside the auditor's office all night and plan to marry in some place warm. Ceremonies are allowed starting this Sunday.
The longest lines were up in Seattle where the first marriage license was signed just after midnight. By 7:00, a record 300 licenses were issued in King County.
Governor Chris Gregoire signed the law on Wednesday. It was passed by the Washington Legislature earlier this year before opponents turned in enough signatures to put a referendum before voters last month and was upheld.
