The Blazers began their 2012-13 season Wednesday, facing off in a preseason game against the Los Angeles Lakers.  Although it was just a preseason game, the Blazers looked good as they beat the Lakers 93-75.  Jason Quick joined Bernie on Flight 750 Thursday to weigh in on the game and critique the performances of all the new members.

First round pick Damian Lillard provided perhaps the most impressive performance from anyone in the game as he finished the night with 14 points, seven assists and five boards.  Quick had this to say regarding Lillard’s performance:

“You had to be encouraged by what you saw from him.  His jumper is just so fundamentally sound.  It’s smooth, it’s soft and he’s got confidence in it.

And the good news for Blazers fans, last night does not appear to be an outlier of a game.  Quick insists that Lillard has impressed him and the Blazers since the moment he stepped on the court for the team.

“His shot has just been on.  We knew that he could do it against lesser competition in summer league.  But he’s proving that he’s going to be able to carry that on with the big boys.  I think that’s the thing that really stood out to me is the confidence and the form in which he is shooting.”

Quick also spoke about the other first round pick from this summer’s draft, Meyers Leonard.

“He wants to go straight to the rim and dunk it.  And I love that about him.   He does have an element of toughness to him – he does not shy away from contact.  I think he’s realizing now that he is physically gifted and that he can not only compete but maybe out-physical some of these guys with his leaping ability and his agility.”

Take a listen as Quick and Bernie discuss which players they expect to make the team this year and be sure to look for Quick’s columns each and every week in the Oregonian and at Oregonlive.
