More Bad News for Jefferson Smith

Jefferson Smith
In a joint statement issued Thursday, the Portland police and fire unions say they are pulling their support for Portland Mayoral Candidate Jefferson Smith. Portions of the statement say their members count on them to make recommendations and at this point they cannot make a strong recommendation for either candidate.
After hearing the news, Smith's campaign released a statement saying: "We're obviously disappointed to lose any support, but our strong base of grass roots support will remain our focus during the next 27 days." When the unions endorsed him back in April, he called it "a potentially game changing endorsement."
The union's decision comes on the heels of reports of a 1993 assault where Smith was in an altercation with a woman. His testimony was recounted by her. His extremely poor driving record has also come to light during the campaign.
