Executing Killers Deters Murders. But Our Governor Doesn't Care.
It’s long past time for Governor Kitzhaber to
follow Oregon’s laws and execute the convicted killer, Gary Haugen.
There are
plenty of reasons for this but these are at the top of my list:
Haugen committed murder and the law says that
after a fair trial and appropriate appeals the sentence should be carried
out. Kitzhaber has the right to grant a
reprieve but that reprieve must be accepted by Haugen, and the killer says he
doesn’t want it.
But the best reason to
kill Haugen is that once he’s dead he can’t kill again and there are too many
occasions where convicted killers have escaped or been pardoned and killed
again.
Further, the best university studies prove that every time you execute a
killer, you deter the murders in the future of at least ten innocent
people. So Governor Kitzhaber has
decided to ignore and violate Oregon law, to spare the life of a killer, and to
further endanger the lives of the people who elected him.
If you don’t like the
death penalty, by all means work to change it. But the public opinion polls show that Americans of every age, political
party and race support capital punishment by a solid majority.
