Is Your Password On The "Worst" List?

Just in time for the holiday shopping season, our Tech Expert, Brian M. Westbrook, joined us on Portland's Morning News this morning with an annual list of the Top 25 "Worst Passwords". Haven't we been talking about this for YEARS? I was surprised to hear some of these still made the list.

Check out the full list on Brian's Tech Blog for some tips on creating good passwords!

How Much is Too Much?

Here's what a listener sent to the KXL news room:

"Enough of the occupy coverage. Quit broadcasting the stories and they will go away. These folks are out of control and you are adding fuel to the fire. They have already cost taxpayers close to a cool million. Money I would much rather spend on education."

First of all, you must know that we are all feeling a bit of "Occupy Burnout" in the news room.  Every day at our news meetings, we talk about what needs to be covered, and what is inconsequential. I have put a stop to some stories because they were too "inside baseball" or detailed.  However, when a group blocks streets or bridges, we will cover it.  When a group has a stand off with police all weekend long, we'll cover it. When a group throws rocks at banks or even loudly protests in front of banks, we'll cover it.  When a group leads hundreds of students out of their classrooms, we'll cover it.   I believe that is our obligation.   In a perfect world, their demands would be specific,  banks and lawmakers would hear (and heed) their requests, and news rooms would return to the task of covering a wider variety of stories.    Your constructive feedback is always welcome at KXL.  Thanks to the listener who sent the email.

Is Italy's Problem Our Problem?

Italy may be close to falling off a cliff and might have to grab hold of our hand.

I spent some time this week with Jim Cavalli. He teaches history at Clark College and is also active in Italian-American organizations. Cavalli lived in Italy when the country switched its currency to the Euro.

Jim recalls the price of almost everything seemed to double overnight.  That included the cost of pensions promised to government workers.

Cavalli believes Italy will fix its debt problem.  But he says it will be "messy and brutal."   Italy owes more money than Spain, Portugual, Greece and Ireland combined.  Jim says there may be some lessons for the U.S. in all this.

Jim says a bailout of Italy may involve help from the United States and China.  He says Italy needs to end corruption, do a better job of collecting taxes (huge underground economy) and thin its bureaucracy.

Cavalli will be on Portland's Morning News Thursday, November 17th.

Black Friday Shopping Comes Early

Many retailers, including Macy's, WalMart, Target and Toys R Us are opening on Thanksgiving night, to give shoppers a jump on Black Friday deals.  Many outlet malls have been doing this for years, including the Woodburn Company Stores and the Columbia Gorge Premium Outlets in Troutdale.  But a part-time Target employee in Nebraska has sent a petition to his employer, asking them to go back to opening at 5am Friday morning.  He says being open on Thanksgiving and staying open all night takes people away from their families.  At last check, 100,000 people have signed the petition but Target says it's only responding to what customers want.
Do you go shopping on Black Friday?  Would you go shopping on Thanksgiving night?  There are always long lines and backups on the freeways at the two outlet malls, so its obviously very popular.  Personally, I can't imagine anything I would want so badly that I would fight those crowds!  But maybe I'm missing something.  What kind of deals are you finding out there?

A Warning to Hunters and Hikers as Storm Moves in.

The death of a missing hunter near Mt St Helens serves as a reminder for all of us if we're headed out to the woods this time of year: Things can turn bad quickly.  Skamania County Undersheriff Sheriff Dave Cox wants people to remember that technology is a great help but can’t always bail you out in the wilderness.  There are no cell towers up there.  He also reminds people that the weather in the cascades can change hour by hour.  We bring this up now because a big storm is making its way into Oregon today.  We can expect up to 2 feet of snow later today on Mt Hood.  We’ll talk to the National Weather Service this morning on KXL.

Also, we are still on “Occupy Porltand” watch.  PSU students plan to walk out at Noon today to support the movement.

Occupy Lawsuit?

The man who says police hurt his already-injured back during an Occupy Portland scuffle over the weekend is talking.  Justin Bridges says he was roughed up by police and he is furious.  He says he told them he couldn't breathe when they dragged him out of the crowd and they laughed.  Sgt Pete Simpson says all they did was get him out of a dangerous situation when things got heated downtown.  Bridges is being hailed a hero among the demonstrators. A poster child for police brutality in what seemed to be an overall non-violent event over the weekend. We've got their comments and comments from Bridges from his hospital bed.  We'll also get the latest on Occupy Wall Street.  Mayor Bloomberg will talk about why the demonstrators there were kicked out of their camps overnight.  The Occupy story continues.  Listen to 101 FM KXL this morning for the details.
