Portland Artist Needs Your HelpI first learned of this story thanks to an ad in the Willamette Week that Stewart had bought, pleading with the thief to return the pieces, no questions asked. I called Stewart and learned a little more about him that really touched me. The two pieces that were taken were two of his favorites. One actually belonged to his wife...he didn't actually paint it for her but she loved it so much she claimed ownership. I learned how much art means to Stewart...that even though these pieces aren't self-portraits exactly, there is always a piece of him in his artwork. He went on to tell me that when he learned the pieces had been stolen, it felt like part of his soul was taken. I am not an artist myself but when he told me how much his love for drawing means to him, and how it actually saved his life seven years ago when he was going through a really depressing time, it made me want to help. His story was featured on Portland's Morning News, you can also see the pieces here, as well as get Stewart's contact information if you know anything about the missing pieces. Hopefully you know something about this stolen art, and together we can help Jason Stewart.-Lacey

Blasts in Boston Hit Close to HomeWe here at KXL are working hard to bring you all the information, and the most accurate. At times, that can be difficult. In the beginning, there were reports that 12 people were dead, but now we know that is only two. Also, some media outlets are reporting that a suspect is in custody, but police in Boston are not confirming that. Please know that we are doing our best to sort through all the information and we'll keep on this story as it continues to develop. All of our thoughts are with those in Boston and everyone effected by this tragedy. -Lacey

Should You Step In When A Parent Goes Too Far?4-12-13 Witnesses watched as a mom kicked and punched and threw her daughter into a cement wall at the zoo earlier this week. Police say the daughter is between the age of 3 and 5 years old. One witness tried to intervene and the mom starting yelling at her. The witness then told security about it and security called 9-1-1. By the time police arrived, the mom and child were gone. As I am writing this, the police are still looking for this mom. I came across a similar incident at a department store one time. A woman was spanking and yelling at a young girl. It wasn't a clear sign of abuse like this zoo case but it seemed over the top to me. My friend and I struggled with our instincts to say something but wondered if it was our business. We also wondered what kind of trouble we could bring to ourselves if we stepped in. Or, if we might escalate the situation and bring more harm to the child. Thankfully, the woman stopped when we stared at her. At least, she stopped for the time being. I wish now I would have said something. According to the Dept of Human Services Website, child abuse is defined as an injury to a child that is not accidental. The abuse is defined by the effect on the child and not by the motivation of the parents. The "effect" can include bruises or cuts, or burns or electrical shocks, or poisoning and of course, death. Spanking is not considered abuse but if it leaves a mark, it could be. Portland police say the witness in the zoo case did the right thing. She tried to stop the abuse and then quickly told a security guard who called police. ~Rebecca

Are Your Allergies Acting Up?Each year, 40 Million Americans suffer from seasonal allergies. Sneezing, coughing, wheezing, sniffing. My son isn't even 10 years old and I've seen him struggle with this for years. I watched him just yesterday walk across a freshly cut lawn. We got home. He took off his grass-laden shoes and then proceeded to rub his eyes. Next thing I know, he was sniffing and puffy. He and I are taking a daily dose of children's Claritan every day. (Yes, I'm taking the child version--I bought the econo-size). If you can relate to this kind of suffering, this fact may make you feel better. Portland is one of the best cities for allergies. We are 98th on the list of the worst allergy cities. Last year, we were 100. Jackson Mississippi is number 1. Knoxville, Tennessee had the number spot for 3 years in a row. So, it could be worse. Hmmm, that doesn't make me feel much better. You?
