THE LARS LARSON SHOW                         Honestly Provocative.

Lars LarsonLars got his start in radio at age 16 spinning records (remember 45s?) and reading news, sports and weather (twice an hour) on KTIL (The Mighty 1590) from a little cinderblock building on the edge of a cow pasture in Tillamook, Oregon (75 miles West of Portland, Oregon).

36 years later, he’s only moved 75 miles east to Portland and light years to “the Right”. Emmy and Peabody award winner Lars Larson brings nearly four decades of experience as a radio and television journalist to the microphone for six hours of the best talk radio in America. Six hours of daily prep keep The Lars Larson Show on top of the news and top-of-mind for listeners across the country.

Along the way, Lars has worked for more than a dozen radio stations and five television stations. Today, Lars holds down the fort from 12pm – 4pm on Radio Northwest flagship FM NEWS 101 KXL. His local talk show airs on seventeen stations in the Pacific Northwest (and earns him the biggest local talk radio audience in the region).

Phony Funny Money

I’m holding Obama responsible for this crazy Trillion dollar coin.  You know the one where Nobel Prize winning economist and hard core lefty Paul Krugman hopes to solve the government’s money troubles by minting a coin made from Platinum and putting “one trillion dollars” on the front of it.  Our federal government is spending a trillion dollars a year more than it takes in.  The President has not proposed a budget that gets the support of congress.  And he has to ask congress for permission to borrow money to fund this lunacy.  That’s in the constitution.  But congress wants to hold back borrowing till the President proposes some cuts to spending.  The president has demanded that they hand over that power to him.  Now the president’s allies have proposed the trillion dollar platinum coin idea.  it would let him get around all that “ask congress” stuff and just keep spending.  It inflates the currency, and devalues every dime you’ve got left in your pockets…the ones that aren’t already gone through the middle class tax cuts that the president promised he would never allow.  And now congressman Greg Walden wants a law to forbid the trillion dollar inflation coin.  You think Obama will sign that one?

Obama's Hard and Fast Gun Control Bid

I’ll bet a lot of you are tired of the debate over guns.  The President doesn't care.  He’s not one to waste a good crisis to push his jihad against American Second Amendment rights.  Over the weekend, the story broke that the President plans to have a new gun law for the whole country signed into law in just three weeks.  And it’s a crazy one.

Register virtually every gun owner.  Then forbid those Americans the right to sell, trade, or give away…even to family members…tens of millions of firearms.  None of this will save a child’s life.  This country was founded by people who feared a tyrannical government.  Because of that, they included the individual right of citizens to own guns. Now a government that shows little respect for constitutional rights…threatens to disarm folks or force them to register with the government merely to exercise 2nd amendment rights.  And the President makes it clear he wants this to happen so fast that there will be almost no chance to even debate the law.  The old crazy Nancy Pelosi, pass the law to find out what’s in it.  I’ll bet Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin are rolling in their graves right now.

Shameful Van Sant

Portland is understandably proud that top Hollywood director Gus Van Sant calls the Rose City home.  But Van Sant should be ashamed of his latest movie, which hits theaters tonight.  It’s original script called for star Matt Damon, representing the evil energy companies that heat our homes and power our cars, to lie to simple farmers and buy their land for evil fracking to produce natural gas.  The main lie is that fracking is destructive, dangerous and even deadly.  But there’s a problem with that.  the outgoing director of the EPA under President Obama recently had to admit to congress, quote, “there are no proven cases where fracking has affected water”.  And it turns out that some of the environmental groups have played fast and loose with the truth.  And the truth is that natural gas has fallen dramatically in price, which benefits electric production and industry and your ability to live in a house warmed by gas. So they quickly rewrote the movie…Damon is still a bad guy…and the environmental crusader in the movie turns out to be an evil energy company shill.  If you are a greenie who likes tree hugging propaganda…you’re gonna love it.

A Tax That I Actually Might Like..?

I think I've finally found a tax I might like.  Gasoline, Diesel and weight mile taxes fund Oregon’s road system.  But cars get much better mileage these days than they used to.  The cars that drove the most miles paid the greatest taxes. Heavy vehicles usually paid more than light ones.  But battery cars don’t pay any gasoline taxes at all.  The state wants a vehicle miles tax.  The more you drive the more you pay.   My biggest fear is that the state will make this too complicated.  Some big government types will want to put a GPS tracker in every car.  It’s expensive, prone to failure and it invites charging not just for miles driven but where you drive and when you drive…more for rush hour for instance or more for congested areas.  Let’s not reinvent the wheel. So I have an alternative.  Most people know roughly the miles they drive every year.  Pay the tax on your estimated miles and make up the difference when you renew.  It’s simple and it charges all taxpayers on their use of public roads.

New Year. Same Obama.

The President got what he wanted. Higher taxes on the rich. Enough money to run the federal government for about five days.  We still have a federal deficit north of a trillion dollars, and the new taxes will pay about five percent of that…if the bill didn't also contain about 30 billion dollars a year in new spending. And there’s the real problem.  Spending.

The Congressional budget office says that this new plan adds about 300 billion dollars in new spending over the next ten years. And the President has promised…cross his heart…to cut spending sometime in the next few months or years. Of course, he promised four years ago to cut the deficit in half.  Back then it was a trillion dollars a year.  It’s still a trillion dollars.  Social security and Medicare are still insolvent.  And the President has given raises out to federal employees by executive order.  Hollywood gets new bigger tax breaks. So does NASCAR. And Rum from Puerto Rico. And two wheeled electric vehicles. And Asparagus farmers.

Oh, and by the way...When the President claims he didn't raise your taxes…check your January 15th paycheck. Social security taxes on all workers go up two percent…so if your family has income of 50-thousand a year, that’s a thousand in higher taxes.  If his lips move…he’s lying.

10 Years...30 Years...What's The Difference?

Oregon’s lawmakers bought a real pig in a poke with this deal.  Governor Kitzhaber comes out and asks for authority to strike a ten year deal for “tax certainty” by Nike.  Before anyone has a chance to think about it, a special session of the legislature passes the thing.  Now I like Nike and I hope they stay here forever and create lots of new jobs.  But they’re a worldwide company and frankly that doesn’t seem likely.  Then we find out that its not a ten year deal for Nike…but a thirty year deal.  and we find out  it’s not just one company…the governor now has the right to pick winners and losers for tax certainty and the deals can run out to as much as forty years.  The law seems to forbid making promises that must be kept by future legislatures and decisions by voters.  And I fully expect that governor retread will ask the legislature to approve a sales tax for Oregon, because goodness knows the government just doesn’t have enough of your paycheck yet.  You wonder if there’s a Santa Claus?  Yep…and he lives in the Pearl and commutes to Salem every day.
