Still Bike Friendly But…

Portland has fallen several notches in Bicycling Magazine‘s latest ranking of America’s most bike friendly cities.  Writer Ian Dille says Portland, which had ranked 1st, dropped to 4th.

Dille says the lower ranking is not necessarily because Portland has done anything wrong. He says it’s partly due to a virtual lack of growth in the city’s rate of bicycle commuting in recent years.

Another factor, according to Dille, is that some commuters say they’d like to bike to work, but don’t. They’re afraid cars will run into them, even when cyclists are in the bike lane.

Dille says Washington D.C. has installed special curbs, which help keep wayward drivers away from bicyclists. He implies that that’s something Portland should look at.

A spokeswoman for Bicycling Magazine says the new rankings will be available online Friday or Saturday.
