RAINIER – A fatal hit and run crash along Highway 30 west of Rainier killed 74-year-old  bicyclist Peter Michael Linden of St. Helens.

At around 3:00 Saturday afternoon, police got a report of a hit and run where a pickup truck struck a bicycle on Highway 30 west near milepost 50.  The pickup, driven by 34-year-old Kristopher Lee Woodruff from Vernonia, was stopped by an OSP trooper and detained a few minutes later.

Linden died after tumbling down an embankment off the highway.  Woodruff became distracted while looking at a text message on his phone, driving his  pickup onto the shoulder, hitting Linden.  Woodruff kept driving without stopping until OSP pulled him over.

He’s been booked in Columbia County Jail for Manslaughter in the First Degree, Felony Hit & Run, and a warrant out of Washington County for Fail to Appear.
