GASTON, Ore. — A tragedy at Hagg Lake turned even more tragic after four family members drowned on Monday night. They were not wearing life jackets despite a free checkout station just feet away.
A 3 year-old boy was floating face down in the water. People at a picnic area pulled him out and performed CPR until firefighters got there, but he did not survive.
Authorities looked for boy’s family and later said they believed that at least three other people were also missing in the lake after finding a beach towel, cooler, shoes and other personal items on the beach. A vehicle registered to the same person whose belongings were found was sitting in the parking lot.
“Rivers and lakes have hazardous ever-changing bottoms that are dangerous to unsuspecting swimmers. The best way to keep yourself safe while swimming in lakes and rivers is to wear a life jacket,” said Sergeant Michael Alexander.
Divers recovered the bodies of a mother and her two kids on Tuesday. The boy belonged to the mother’s daughter. All four lived together in Hillsboro.
They’re identified as 42-year-old Jova Ixtacua-Castano, 25-year-old Gabriela Garcia-Ixtacua, 13-year-old Michael Garcia-Ixtacua and 3-year-old Jeremy Scholl.
A memorial fund has been set up for the family at any Wells Fargo bank. Just ask to donate to the Garcia Memorial Fund.
