Salem, Oregon – The Lighthouse Animal Shelter in Scio has agreed to give Helen Keller, a blind bison, a new home. Wayne Geiger says they went to Salem over the weekend and tried to load her into a trailer, but Helen bumped her hoof, got scared and refused to move any further.

The shelter’s Wayne Geiger says they plan to build a ramp, place her food on it and eventually get her used to the idea of going up the ramp. He says it could take weeks and adds¬† “a lot of this is going to be up to her.”

The blind bison’s current owner suffered injuries in a car wreck and has some financial challenges and says she can no longer give Helen the care she needs.
