2 Dead After Getting Hit By MAX Train

Written by Rosemary Reynolds on August 16, 2014

Gresham, Oregon –A woman in a wheel chair and her adult son are dead after being hit by a MAX train in Gresham.

It happened at the Gresham City Hall station at around 11:30 am Saturday Morning. John Paul Kelly age 48 apparently jumped into his mother’s lap as she sat in  a motorized wheelchair.  The jumping action caused the toggle switch to move sending both of them onto the tracks between two trains.  One of the trains  was moving.  Bertha Kelly died at the scene.  John Paul Kelly died at an area hospital two hours later.

John Paul had Downs Syndrome.  He had a fascination with cars motorcycles and trains.  His family described him as always being happy.  Friends and neighbors have left loving notes on the family’s apartment door. Stuffed animals flowers  and candles were set in front of the door too.   Bertha Kelly was a retired nurse who eventually started using a wheelchair because of severe back pain.  Gresham police continue to investigate the accident.  It’s the second fatal collision involving a MAX train in less than two weeks.
