Portland, OR – Portland Public School’s superintendent is set to get a big pay raise.
The school board voted Monday 5-2 to give Carole Smith a 28% pay increase, bringing her total yearly pay to just under $250,000. The increase would be part of a 3-year contract extension.
The board members who voted in favor of the pay increase say Smith’s focus and dedication to the district made her worth it. They also say that replacing Smith would cost at least as much.
Critics have blasted the move, with the two board members who voted against the pay raise saying Smith’s leadership skills are suspect, and that they believe the district could have gotten a better deal. They pointed out that teachers in the district fought to a near strike for a pay raise 1/12th as big.
