Cannon Beach, Ore. –The mother of a 2-year old girl who was found dead in a Cannon Beach hotel room on Friday has been arrested. An arrest warrant was issued when Cannon Beach Police Chief Jason Schermerhorn shared the results of an autopsy on the toddler, Isabella Smith.
The Cannon Beach Police Chief who announced at a late night press conference Sunday, that Jessica Smith was found by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter 15-miles away from Cannon Beach on a logging road off Highway 26. The Clatsop County District Attorney says the 40-year old is facing an aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder charge, which carries a possible death penalty.
“The manner of death is homicide, which means death caused by another person. They were unable to determine the cause of death and we are waiting on a toxicology report”, Schermerhorn said. That report is expected to be released at the end of the week.
The Oregonian is reporting that on the day the toddler was found dead and her 13-year old sister Alana, critically cut by their mother,Smith was under court order to turn over the kids to their father, Greg. His attorney told the Oregonian that the Goldendale, Wash. dad had filed for divorce in June and wanted shared custody of their kids. A judge granted him Friday visits beginning July 31st.
