PORTLAND – A Southwest Portland man tried tight rope walking the Steel Bridge Saturday morning.  Around 6am, police arrived to see Benjamin Lovitz walking on the cables that run across the top of the lift span – a height of 270′.  The entire bridge was blocked off and shut down so it couldn’t lift.  A River Patrol boat and a Portland Fire boat were placed under the bridge in case Lovitz fell or jumped off.  After about 10 minutes, Lovitz walked down the stairs of the east tower where he met Portland Police.  He was then taken into custody, arrested and booked on Trespass and Disorderly Conduct.
