Rainier, Oregon – The Ralph Painter Memorial Run will be held Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Rainier High School. His brother, Alan Painter, says the run is a fun way to honor his brother and raise money for Columbia County high school students who can’t afford college.
Alan says ” there’s a lot of people in the community who loved Ralph and its just another way to remember him and have fun doing something he loved to do.”
Ralph Painter was Police Chief in Rainier when he was shot and killed while responding to a call on January 5th, 2011. The suspect has yet to go to trial.
His daughter, Julie Heuer, helps organize the event. She says they ran as a family when she was growing up and says ” I think that’s one of the main reasons we continue to run. It’s even more of a big deal to us now after his passing because that was something we feel like he passed down to us that we feel we need to honor and continue to do.”
Painter was a member of both the cross country and track and field teams at St. Helen’s High School, and remained an active runner up until his death.
The race is a 10k and 5k run and walk.
