WASHINGTON COUNTY, OR – A county surveyor was rescued Thursday, after falling 20 feet into a steep ravine and into a creek bed.
Forest Grove Fire & Rescue responded just before 2:30pm on the report of a fall near Gales Creek Campground, just off the Wilson River Highway in the Tillamook State Forest.
Division Chief David Nemeyer says the 57-year-old man was concious and talking with crews, but in extreme pain due to broken ribs.
Because of the steep terrain, a decision was made to call for a Coast Guard helicopter to assist in the rescue.
A HH-60J Jayhawk from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria arrived to the scene shortly afterward and worked with firefighters to hoist the man 75-feet into the air.
Nemeyer reports that the helicopter clipped a small maple tree during the operation, but the pilot determined everything was okay. The man was transported, along with a Forest Grove Fire & Rescue member to a Portland hospital.
