SALEM — A teenager drowned at Three Pools Recreational Area on the little north fork of the Santiam River Monday afternoon. The popular spot east of Salem and north of Detroit Lake attracts 15,000 visitors each year.
The boy is identified as 14-year-old Sean Kaleopa. His family noticed that he was missing and found him at the bottom of a pool. They used a human chain to bring him to shore where they tried to revive him.
Sean’s family say he was a big brother to all and was active in sports at Houck Middle School, especially football.
It’s not clear if the teen was wearing a life jacket. This marks the ninth drowning in Southwest Washington and Oregon since last Sunday.
