VANCOUVER — A man jumped off the dock at Klineline Pond on Wednesday afternoon to get a hat that was blowing away and didn’t make it back alive.  His body was recovered on Thursday.

42-year-old Pioneer Kelulau was with family when the hat flew off a child’s head into the water.  He got a hold of the hat, but on the way back about 50′ from shore he started calling for help.

A family member dove in, but couldn’t rescue Kelulau because the water was too cold.  It’s about 50 degrees and 40′ deep.

The park was closed to everyone except the victim’s family for searchers to complete their mission.

This is the third drowning in Southwest Washington since the weekend.
