Lockdown At The Oregon State Penitentiary

Salem, Oregon -The Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem is in lockdown following a fight between inmates today. It happened in the dining room and about 30 inmates were involved. The Oregon Department of Corrections is investigating to see what started it. No one required outside medical treatment.

During a lockdown, visiting is cancelled and inmates are not allowed out of their cells. Betty Bernt with the Department of Corrections says its not clear how long the lockdown will last . She said it could be several hours or several days.

The penitentiary houses 2,000 inmates and is Oregon’s only maximum security prison.
