The OHSU board has approved a recommendation to arm campus police

Campus security chief Greg Moawad says it takes too long for Portland Police to respond to an emergency and the campus layout is quite complex for officers who aren’t familiar with it.

But He says the focus is not on guns but on communication, de-escalation of potentially violent situations, and “strategic disengagement” – an approach Moawad calls the first of its kind, encouraging officers to back down if a situation threatens to lead to more harm than it prevents.

The training and arming of officers is expected to be completed by mid-September.
