Portland, Oregon – A new survey by Consumer Reports says Kaiser Permanente Sunnyside Medical Center in Clackamas is one of the top 15 hospitals in the country for heart bypass and valve surgeries. The first ever survey covered 400 hospitals across the country.
Dr. John Santa with Consumer Reports says Portland area hospitals receiving an average ranking are Providence Portland, Providence St. Vincent’s, Legacy Emmanuel, Legacy Good Samaritan and Tuality Health Care. He says OHSU gets a low ranking due to its complication rate.
Dr. Santa says “OHSU is a great place, I have spent a lot of time there and on the faculty and I love it. I know they’re trying to figure this out. But they have some issues they need to deal with.”
OHSU is saying not so fast. Dr Howard Song is an OHSU heart surgeon. He says often times surveys like this one tend to disadvantage academic medial centers. And also doesn’t take into account the complexity of the surgeries they do perform.
“Many of our patients who are operated on at OHSU have actually been turned down for heart surgery by other community hospitals in Oregon.”
He also points out that only one of the top 15 hospitals listed is a university of medical school.
