MARION COUNTY, Ore. — A grass fire kept fire crews busy east of Salem Sunday. A man was clearing his property by burning brush and tree stumps and the fire got to be more than he could handle. He had to drive home to call 9-1-1 because cell phone reception in the area was so poor.
It took crews from Marion County Fire District 1 and nearby jurisdictions four hours to bring the fire under control. Crews had to bring in water because there were no hydrants in the area. They managed to keep the fire from spreading to a nearby forested hillside and also kept it from burning a nearby structure.
