PORTLAND — Work on the Vermont and Newbury bridges on Highway 99W/Barbur Blvd. will close the southbound lanes at Capitol Highway from 9:00 Friday night until Monday morning at 5:00.
It might be a headache for drivers, but it’ll be better in the long run.
“These bridges were built in 1934 and they’re both in real bad need of repair. We’re going to get these fixed, improve drainage, the ramps and make it a safer roadway,” said ODOT’s Don Hamilton.
The bridges cross two ravines and water is seeping into the joints, causing the steel rebar to rust.
Traffic can detour at Capitol to Bertha and back to 99W. Drivers can still get through the northbound lanes and bicyclists will be allowed through the closure.
This is the first of two weekend closures. The next one is in three weeks.
