The timing may be right for the University of Oregon to launch a fundraising drive to raise up to three-billion dollars from a small number of wealthy donors.
According to the Register Guard, a small, unnamed, group of wealthy constituents told lawmakers in 2012 that if they’d pass a bill to create an independent governing board for the school, wealthy donors would produce an influx of money.
The new board, free of state oversight, takes effect July 1st. The University says it’s hoping those wealthy donors can write several billion dollars worth of checks. The fundraising could begin in October.
A University official says five percent of the donors raise ninety-five percent of the money. And that they’ll need one-billion dollars just to accomplish all that’s on the University’s agenda.
