Portland Lawmaker Says Parents Of The Reynolds High Shooter Should Be Held Criminally Responsible

Senator Ginny Burdick

Portland, Oregon – Portland Senator Ginny Burdick tells NBC News she thinks the parents of the  teen who shot and killed another student at Reynolds High School in Troutdale and then killed himself should be held criminally responsible. The Oregonian reports her office has received  dozens of calls since then. She’s also received a death threat which is being investigated by Oregon State Police.

She wants the 2015 Oregon Legislature to consider making it a crime to endanger a minor by allowing access to a gun. A similar measure failed to gain traction during the 2013 session.

Reaction to Burdick’s proposal is mixed. We asked listeners on our KXL Facebook page what they think. Here are some of the responses. Amanda says maybe if the shooter were 5, but he was 15, so no way. Buck says the kid defeated the gun safe; not the parents’ fault. Sharlie says let’s continue to blame others. That will solve everything. Hello. Take responsibility!

The parents should absolutely be held responsible if their children get ahold of their guns and harm or kill themselves or others. If people are going to own firearms, they need to take responsibility for their firearms and lock them up. I own a gun, and it is always securely locked up. It is the right thing to do.

I think parents should most def be responsible for their childrens actions no matter what.
They are the parent caring for the child until age 18! Secured guns or not. This is not a gun issue! This is a lack of a caring and compassionate culture. Kids have grown up seeing that WAR IS GOOD AND WAR IS NOT THE ANSWER is what these kids need to see. The sooner the government gets out of these wars and in a peaceful place-the sooner the culture will shift. Its quire obvious this kid was thrilled by guns and war and nobody paid attention to this with all the warning signs. Shame on the parents and they should take the consequences for their childs actions! Maybe people will start actually paying attention!
