PORTLAND – The U.S. Navy was unable to come to Portland last year because of sequestration, but they’re back at Rose Festival Fleet Week this year.

Two Naval vessels will dock here on Thursday with 600 sailors on board.  The U.S.S. Lake Champlain is a cruiser and the U.S.S. Spruance is a destroyer.

200 more sailors will arrive as part of the Canadian and Coast Guard fleet.  Canadian ships will arrive this afternoon, the Coast Guard ties up Wednesday followed by U.S. ships on Thursday afternoon.

Security measures will be in place to protect the vessels, crew members and public.  Visitors can board the ships Friday through Sunday from 9:30 to 3:30 for free tours.  The entire fleet will be gone by noon next Monday.

Since the Rose Festival started back in 1907, visiting ships and other vessels, like submarines have been making their way to Portland’s waterfront.
