The syphilis rate in Oregon is nearly twice the national average. (10 per 100,000, compared with 5.3 nationally.)

The Statesman Journal quotes figures from the Oregon Health Authority showing early syphilis cases are at their highest level since 1989. Syphilis is most contagious during the first year.

According to the Health Authority, gonorrhea cases jumped 18% from 2012 to 2013.

State health officials say the increase in the rate of sexually transmitted disease is alarming.
