SALEM, OR – While many troops begin to leave Afghanistan, a new wave of Oregon National Guard soldiers are shipping out.
The first wave of 300 have started training and will likely be deployed sometime this summer. All together, 1,100 Oregon Guardsmen from the 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team will head to Afghanistan.
Senator Ron Wyden recently visited the trainees, telling them he knows that being some of the last troops in Afghanistan won’t be easy. “It strikes me that you’re going to have more jobs. They’re going to be more difficult. And there will be fewer of you to do them.”
Most deployments last about nine months, meaning Oregon soldiers will be there until summer 2015.
