PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Monica Wehby has won Oregon’s Republican primary for U.S. Senate.
Wehby defeated state Rep. Jason Conger of Bend. Wehby is a physician from Portland. She has excited Republicans in Washington, D.C., who hope she’s the perfect candidate to attack President Barack Obama’s health care law.
Wehby was embarrassed, however, by recent revelations that her ex-husband and a former boyfriend called police, reporting she harassed them. No charges were filed in either case. Conger was the early front-runner, but he struggled to raise money and attention since Wehby jumped into the race.
Wehby will face Democratic incumbent Jeff Merkley in the November election. Republicans hope she can make the seat competitive and boost their effort to retake the Senate majority.
