Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling began with an apology and ended with a rant against former NBA player Magic Johnson during an interview on CNN Monday night. He told The Anderson Cooper Show he kept quiet about racist remarks he made because Johnson told him not to say anything. But he says Johnson later decided not to get involved. Sterling believes Johnson wants to buy the team. Sterling says he’s not a racist and made “a terrible, terrible mistake.” He blasted Johnson saying “what kind of guy goes to every city, has sex with every girl, then he catches HIV? Is that someone we want to respect and tell our kids about?” Sterling went on to say “ I think he should be ashamed of himself. I think he should go into the background. But what does he do for black people? He doesn’t do anything.”
Sterling’s estranged wife Shelly appeared on The Today Show and said she believes her husband is not racist, but thinks he has dementia. She is part owner of the team and while she says the NBA should ban her husband, it should not force her to sell her part ownership. She said “why am I the victim, when he’s the perpetrator? If somebody killed somebody, does the wife have to stand trial too?” She accuses the NBA of being sexist.
