Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel is part of a select group of children’s cancer centers that gets to participate in The Canines and Childhood Cancer Study.  It’s a groundbreaking new program where trained dogs get paired with sick kids and every week when the child comes in, the dog comes in to visit.  They video tape the sessions and compile data for four months for each child.  Both on the kid and the dog.

Only 100 children are randomly chosen to participate, 4 are from Randall.  After a year they will compile a report that hopes to prove how animals can improve the stress level for young people.  Meantime, saliva samples will be taken on the dogs and conclusions will be made there as well.
