Portland Public Schools Superintendent is defending one of her principals after parents keep on complaining about her. The complaints have been coming in for years now about the principal at the Metropolitan Learning Center. She’s been testified against at school board meetings. Parents just don’t seem to like her leadership style.
Superintendent Carole Smith isn’t taking the negative comments lightly. She defends the principal by sending out a letter to parents saying there’s a strong leader at the helm who is following district policies.
Smith is quoted in the letter of may first as saying “this conflict however is about more than just change it’s about the experience of your school community with a strong leader who is a person of color”.
Parents have been upset about the letter ever since, feeling like Smith raised the issue of race to cover the real sources of conflict.
Christine Miles with Portland Public Schools tells FM News 101 that parents filed 38 complaints in the three years Principal Macarre Traynham has been at the school. Six to eight of them say the principal who is black used race to bully them.
A 47-page independent investigation reveals that race is an issue at the school. The superintendent has asked the school to participate in diversity training. Staff, teachers, parents and students have been asked to participate.
