Portland, Oregon – A Portland mom wants Portland Police to change the way it deals with kids under the age of 10. Police came to Latoya Harris’s home last year, questioned her 9 year old daughter on her front porch about a fight with anther girl and then took her away in handcuffs. She was taken downtown to be fingerprinted and for a mug shot.
Harris tells The Oregonian her daughter is a different child following that experience. She has switched schools because of teasing and is undergoing counseling. She believes police were trying to humiliate her daughter.
Harris complained to the Independent Police Review Division but was not satisfied with the results. So she took her complaint to the Citizen Review Committee. Its asked her to return tomorrow to discuss proposed changes to the way police deal with kids under the age of 10. One suggested change is requiring them to get an order from a juvenile court judge.
