Cougar On The Loose Near SW Portland School

Written by Jeremy Scott on April 30, 2014

PORTLAND — A large cougar is on the loose around Pendleton Park and Hayhurst School near Southwest 55th Drive and Iowa Street. ¬†Neighbors say it’s been roaming the area for the past few days.

The latest sighting was just before 9:00 on Wednesday morning.  Students and teachers were not allowed to leave the school for their safety.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife says never approach a cougar, but if you encounter one, stay calm, look bigger than you are and make noise to scare it away.

More than 5,000 cougars or mountain lions call Oregon home, but such sightings and encounters are rare.
