Swatting: The Newest Prank Craze

Written by Pat Boyle on April 29, 2014

A Vancouver family wonders why a bunch of cop cars pull up to their house and surround the place. It happened Sunday afternoon and its called swatting.

Someone in an online gaming chat room calls 9-1-1  with a fake emergency using an online relay service meant for people who have trouble hearing or speaking.   The caller posed as a 15 year old boy and claimed his mom had been killed, four guys with guns were inside and they set the house on Oakhurst Drive on fire.

More than a dozen cops responded, saw that there was no fire and called the family. The family came outside and said  everything was fine. The Columbian says no one from the family made the call.

The 15 year old who lived there had been taking part in an online gaming chat room and  others in the chat room  told him he’d  just been swatted.
