Funding the Fix

Written by Mike Turner on April 10, 2014

The city’s Transportation Commissioner, Steve Novick, reveals the results of a survey that suggests Portlanders would support a monthly fee to pay for road maintenance and safety projects.

The poll also indicates the 8 to 12 dollar fee would have to be dedicated to those priorities.

A series of town halls will be held in the next three weeks to gather more input on how people want to pay for the fixes. The City Council could act as early as June.

Hmm…. Why can’t they spend the funds that they get that are already designated for this instead of spending them elsewhere? Also, I am a bit concerned about the terminology “safety projects” which could quickly become hijacked for bike boxes, etc.

Is this “fee” model Portland new way to tax us? Arts Tax, now this?
