whitford schoolBeaverton letterBeaverton, Oregon – A band teacher at Whitford Middle School has been arrested after an altercation with a student. Beaverton Police say the incident happened during First Period Band class Thursday. They are calling it  unwanted physical contact with a student and stress it was not sexual in nature.

The school sent a letter home to parents and it says “there was an incident  involving a staff member and a student  in period one band class which did not result in physical injury. When we were made aware of the incident, we contacted the Beaverton Police Department and Beaverton School District Human Resources. ”

Larry Coates has been placed on paid administrative leave. He was booked into the Washington County Jail on harassment charges and  the jail’s website shows he has since been released.

I am trying to figure out, the charges are against him guiding a kid to where they are supposed to go? That’s what I know, as they were marching at the time. Mr. Coates doesn’t abuse people. This is the only explanation, and it’s unfair. Now his reputation is ruined for no good reason.

Yeah. He was always a pretty good teacher. I think the charges are exaggerated. At least it’s PAID leave though.
