PORTLAND – A man who claimed to have a gun and appeared to be high on drugs wandering up to cars and hitting them in downtown Portland outside Lincoln High School on Thursday afternoon was shot with bean bags.
“It could be an incident that we see often, somebody who’s co-affected by mental health issues and drugs which is a very dangerous combination,” said Sergeant Pete Simpson.
The less-lethal round didn’t appear to phase the man at first. He finally dropped to the ground and was handcuffed. A gun wasn’t found, but the man had an object made to look like one.
The 31-year-old was taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation and possibly treatment for an overdose. He is not facing charges.
Traffic came to a halt and mass transit was affected too until the situation was safe. The school was also in lockdown as students were released.
