Portland, Oregon – It’s time to wake up the dragons. The traditional Awakening of the Dragons ceremony takes place tomorrow at noon outside the Riverplace Hotel.  It marks the beginning of dragon boat season. Dragon boat races are held during the Rose Festival on June 7th and 8th.

Race director Tom Crowder with the Portland-Kaohsiung Sister City Association says the ceremony includes  Buddhist monks to bless the boats and then the dragons will be awakened by painting red paint on the dragon’s eyes. That will be followed by a parade on the Willamette River.

70 teams will compete in the races this year. They begin practicing on Sunday with each team  taking turns using the eight dragon boats available.
