NORTH PLAINS — A man who shot a family member with a high-powered rifle at a house on Mountaindale Road north of Highway 26 on Wednesday died from a self-inflicted gunshot after setting the home on fire hours into a standoff with police.

Firefighters let it burn because of the risk to crews not knowing if the suspect was dead or alive.  After police tear gassed the place, firefighters put out the blaze and found the body of 30-year-old Brian Olson inside.  He was found next to a gun and propane torch. The cause of the fire could not be confirmed due to the extreme damage to the home.

James Crandall was able to get away and call 911.  He was found in a vehicle outside the home and rushed to the hospital with “very serious” injuries.  Investigators believe a family dispute led to the shooting.

Olson lived at the home with his 49-year-old girlfriend and her 24-year-old son.
