The death of Reverand Fred Phelps Sr., founder of Westboro Baptist church in Topeka, Kansas could test God’s power of forgiveness.
Phelps, who wasn’t shy of saying God hates gays, died this week at age 84 in a hospice.
Reverand Chuck Currie, with Portland’s Sunnyside United Methodist church, says he hopes all people are forgiven of their sins. Currie says he felt the sting of Phelps’ anti-gay beliefs during a protest at Currie’s congregation about 10 years ago.
Currie tells FM News 101 “We don’t take joy in the deaths of those who have been enemies of our faith or have been evil people.” According to Currie, “the hell that he (Phelps) has experienced has been his life.”
