Portland, Oregon – Portland police today interviewed Officer John Romero who was shot responding to a call about a creepy man in SW Portland Wednesday near Wilson HIgh School. Romero is the school’s resource officer. The shooter turned out to be a wanted fugitive, 49 year old Kelly Swoboda. He kidnapped a woman in Milwaukie in January and was wanted for several robberies. Swoboda was shot and killed during the exchange of gunfire.
Portland police say Officer Romero is in good spirits and is continuing to recover from his injuries. Romero is also asking for continued privacy as the investigation continues.
Chief Mike Reese says ” the members of the Portland Police Bureau are touched by the outpouring of the community support shown to Officer Romero.”
Once the investigation is finished, the case file will be given to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office for presentation to a Grand Jury. Romero will stay on paid administrative leave until the Grand Jury finishes its work.
