PORTLAND — A man was tossed into the back of a trash compactor this morning and barely made it out alive.

27-year-old Liam O’Grady fell asleep inside a dumpster outside the People’s Food Co-op on Southeast 21st near Tibbets and was thrown into the back of a garbage truck picking up the load.

“As the operator was putting hydraulic pressure onto the cardboard to compact it, he heard screams from within the truck,” said firefighter Tommy Schroeder.

The driver stopped the compactor to find O’Grady severely injured.  Rescuers freed him from the back of the truck sandwiched between several layers of cardboard.  He suffered injuries to his upper body including head and chest, but is expected to survive.
