PORTLAND — We’ve learned a lot more about what happened Wednesday afternoon during an exchange of gunfire between an officer and a man wanted for kidnapping and robbery.
Kelly Swoboda, 49, was shot and killed and Officer John Romero was wounded.
Police were called to Southwest Portland after getting a tip of a suspicious man near the Hillsdale Library and Wilson High School. There was an exchange of gunfire when Swoboda wouldn’t follow commands. Witnesses say about five shots were fired and he was hit in the head.
Swoboda was wanted for forcing a Milwaukie tanning salon employee into his van before she escaped in January. He was also a suspect in several bank robberies.
Officer Romero was treated for wounds his hand and arm. He’s out of the hospital resting at home. The eight-year veteran of the police department is assigned to the Youth Services Division.
Mayor Charlie Hales released a statement: “My thoughts go out today to Portland Police Officer John Romero, who was shot in the line of duty on Wednesday. I am thrilled to hear that Officer Romero’s health is improving. I thank Officer Romero and all of his fellow officers for the service they provide every day, protecting our community”.
Swoboda has a lengthy criminal record. He was convicted of armed bank robberies in 1994 and 2006. He was also charged with DUII in 2006 and has infractions for driving while suspended and without insurance.
