2 dead as Drunk Driver Veers into Crowd at SXSW

According to the Associated Press, Austin Police say two people have died after a car drove over temporary barricades being used to manage the crowd distribution at the South By Southwest festival and struck a crowd of pedestrians.

Lt. Brian Moon says 21 others were transported to various hospitals, most with minor injuries. He says five to seven had more serious injuries.

Moon confirms that two victims were confirmed dead at the scene in downtown Austin, along a block lined with several clubs.  

The fatal crash happened around 12:30 a.m. Thursday. The driver fled the vehicle after it crashed into a bank of parked cars, but was tased and has been taken into custody. He is currently facing capital murder charges and a possible death sentence.
