The owner of Rough and Ready Lumber, in Cave Junction, didn’t expect the mill would reopen after it shut down last April for lack of timber and money to upgrade the mill.
Jennifer Phillippi tells FM News 101 she felt terrible that 88 people lost their jobs. Phillippi says the mill plans to reopen this summer, thanks to some federal tax credits and a state business loan.
66 workers will be hired, according to Phillippi. She expects many will be former employees who lost their jobs when the mill shut down.
Phillippi says the hiring’s ripple effect will also mean work for loggers and truckers.
